Having another person with you means there is an independent witness if something goes wrong. It also means that if you become ill, intoxicated, separated from your belongings or involved in a dispute, somebody you trust is there to assist you. I travelled alone and discovered just how vulnerable a foreigner can become when a situation suddenly changes. Consider Using Cash for Nightlife Another major lesson I learned concerns payment. For bars, clubs and similar nightlife expenses, I would personally consider using cash rather than handing over my main bank card, especially anywhere you cannot personally see exactly what is happening with your card and the payment terminal. Take only the amount of cash you reasonably expect to spend. Do not walk around carrying unnecessarily large amounts of money. Cash has its own risks—it can obviously be lost or stolen—but using a limited amount means you can control your maximum financial exposure. Most importantly, nobody needs to take possession of your bank card to process the payment. If you decide to use a card, never allow that card to disappear from your sight. Look at the amount displayed on the terminal yourself before approving anything. Get a receipt. Turn on instant transaction notifications and check your banking app immediately after every transaction. Better still, consider travelling with a separate card or account containing only limited spending money, rather than routinely using a card linked to your main funds. And if you notice something you don't recognise, freeze the card immediately and contact your bank. My Advice to Other Travellers I am not telling people not to visit Colombia. My experience with particular individuals and establishments should not be used to judge an entire country or millions of Colombian people. But I am telling travellers to be alert. Check prices before ordering expensive drinks. Ask for a menu. Take a photograph of the menu or prices if necessary. Check your bill carefully before paying. Never approve a card transaction without seeing the amount yourself. Keep your receipts. Avoid going out alone where reasonably possible, particularly late at night. Tell someone you trust where you are going. Keep your phone charged. Keep emergency contacts readily available. And if you find yourself in a serious confrontation, document what is happening when it is safe and lawful to do so. Contact someone you trust and seek consular assistance where appropriate. Most importantly, never allow the excitement of being on holiday to make you abandon the precautions you would normally take at home. Why I'm Sharing This I could simply return home, put this experience behind me and never speak about it again. But what would anyone else learn from that? I would rather tell my story. I travelled to Colombia expecting to return with memories of a beautiful country and an enjoyable holiday. Instead, part of what I came away with was a very serious lesson about how quickly a foreign traveller can become vulnerable when money, nightlife and unfamiliar surroundings come together. I experienced transactions that I say I did not knowingly authorise. Another attempted transaction involving a different account was stopped by my bank. I disputed a bill of approximately 750,000 Colombian pesos at Hookah that I believed was unjustified. The police became involved. I felt threatened with wrongful arrest. And at a moment when I felt particularly vulnerable, I went live on Facebook because I wanted the world to see what was happening to me. I genuinely believe that decision helped protect me. So I am sharing my experience for one reason: So somebody else can learn from it. Travel. Explore the world. Meet people. Experience different cultures. Enjoy yourself. But remain vigilant. Don't go out alone if you can reasonably avoid it. Protect your cards and your bank accounts. Consider paying limited nightlife expenses in cash. Check every bill before paying.
