The Borana are one of the Oromo communities whose culture has been shaped for generations by the drylands of southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya. Their traditional way of life is closely connected to cattle, pastoralism, community, and the careful management of scarce natural resources. Living across southern Oromia and northern Kenya, the Borana have developed remarkable knowledge of their environment. Their traditional Tula wells are among the best examples of this knowledge. These deep wells provide water for people and livestock, especially during the dry season, and are managed through customary community rules. Another distinctive part of Borana culture is the singing associated with the wells. Herders work together in human chains to bring water from deep underground while singing rhythmic songs. The Gadaa system also remains an important part of Oromo heritage. Through generations and age groups, it has traditionally guided leadership, social responsibilities, decision-making, and community relations. Borana culture can also be seen in traditional clothing, ceremonies, music, dance, marriage customs, and the important role of elders in resolving community disputes. Despite the changes brought by modern life, education, and new livelihoods, many Borana traditions continue to connect people with their land and history. The Borana heritage is a story of community, resilience, and living in harmony with the land.
