One lesson we can take from Siyad Barre’s era is the importance of civic responsibility, discipline, national service, and contributing to the country. Somalia placed a strong emphasis on military service, training, and community participation. I believe we need to bring that spirit of service back in a modern and constructive way. Young people should have meaningful opportunities and where appropriate, a national obligation to serve their communities through military service, emergency response, public safety, education, infrastructure, environmental projects, and other forms of national service. And for those of us who have spent years fighting for Somalia, protecting our communities, defending our dignity, and working to build a better future, we need reinforcements. We cannot carry the responsibility alone. Every generation has a responsibility to step forward and contribute. We need young Somalis who are disciplined, educated, trained, and willing to serve. We need doctors, teachers, engineers, police officers, soldiers, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and public servants. We don’t need to recreate the past exactly. We can take the best lesson from it: a strong nation requires citizens who are willing to serve it. Those of us on the front lines need reinforcements—and the next generation must be prepared to answer the call.
