@sliceoflifemd: Should every kid be on Medicaid? Healthcare is complicated. The history behind it is fascinating. And other countries are solving problems we are still arguing about. If you want nonpartisan healthcare education delivered in plain language every week — my free newsletter breaks down one American policy issue and one international healthcare system every Saturday. 📬 https://sliceoflifemd.substack.com/subscribe #HealthcareReform #HealthcarePolicy #AmericanHealthcare #GlobalHealth #SliceOfLifeMD

A threshold gives Republicans a point to start cutting by lowering the threshold (the the gap in states that haven’t expanded Medicaid). And means testing is expensive and a lot of hassle.

can we first pay pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties the same rate as adults?

Yeah I mean if you accept any low pay in any context eventually the capitalists will want that rate all the time. Physicians can definitely organize to keep their wages up, they have negotiating power but it’s up to them to use it

No. Why are we paying for people who could very well pay for themselves? Youre subsidizing employed upper income people who want to save in family premiums. Stupidest idea ever.

Means-testing is unpopular and vulnerable. That's the rationale. Protect all kids. Everything you mentioned is fixable.

Pediatrician here. I get the reimbursement argument but it would be worth it

Because if you introduce something is only for the poor or only for specific types of kids, rich people and people of privilege will push back against it hard and it’s easier to get people to agree if they think that they’re going to benefit from it too

You point out what would eventually happen if the feds ran all of healthcare. They would control the salary of everyone in the field to control over all costs. This would lead to not enough doctors and nurses. This is seen in Canada and the UK where there are severe not enough people going into medicine.

I think that it probably would lead to changes in private coverage for kids. It's possible that the cost of family plans would go way down because coverage of kids is basically supplemental. I think any large scale public expansion of coverage would have to have some sort of supplemental funding for primary care providers to expand the infrastructure so that providers are fairly compensated.

Cover all kids. Great. Pay Medicaid rates. Bad. Still, it’s a step toward universal health insurance. I hope they improve the pay rate. Making it cover ALL children avoids parents having to prove eligibility which means papery, bureaucracy, and kids falling through the cracks.

Strange stuff I mean for lawsuits when you seek payment for medical expenses you have to say you’re not getting care paid for!? Now if this is enacted anyone until 20 something has their expenses almost entirely paid for though with I guess different details in different states yeah so many angles…

Interesting idea to gradually introduce universal healthcare. In my area, Medicaid reimburses for around 30% of the cost of providing care to kids. We LOSE money seeing kids with Medicaid. If reimbursement for pediatric care doesn’t also increase by about 300%, this plan would collapse all pediatric practices and hospitals. There would simply not be anymore pediatrics in the US.

First get rid of employer based insurance and make all medical tax free. Then let’s see how else we can get the government out of healthcare.

Why should businesses have to cover health insurance, especially small businesses. It’s such a tax which can go to income. Expanding Medicare/aide the system we have is broken and being a contrarian doesn’t help anything.
