![When did you last feel tiny? Scărișoara Cave quietly dismantles your sense of time. Hidden in the Apuseni Mountains of western Romania, it shelters one of Europe’s largest underground glaciers, a frozen world that has endured while kingdoms rose and disappeared above it. A steep descent through a vast sinkhole leads into a chamber where summer simply vanishes, replaced by air so crisp it feels untouched by the modern world. The cave sits at over 1,100 metres above sea level and has been known to locals for centuries. Its permanent ice block covers more than 3,000 square metres, reaches depths of over 20 metres and contains ice estimated to be around 4,000 years old, making it a remarkable archive of past climates. Scientists study its ice cores to understand environmental changes spanning thousands of years. Towering ice formations slowly reshape themselves with the seasons, while only part of the cave is open to visitors, leaving much of its underground world unexplored. Standing beside ice older than recorded history has a way of putting everything into perspective.
