Someone else already commented, but MAMMA MIA! changes a couple of lyrics. Off the top of my head, I know in “Chiquitita” and “Under Attack”. But very minor.

Well now you just have me sad that Dove Cameron still hasn’t made her Broadway debut.

I like to rewrite song lyrics as if they are about stories/sung by characters I like, I would enjoy writing this type of musical!

escape to margaritaville did this too, not everything was changed but a good amount of the lyrics were changed to usher the story along. (both versions of “its my job” in the show feature nearly none of the original lyrics)

Going way back, George Kaufman wrote Hollywood Pinafore in the 1940s which was all new lyrics for songs from Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore (and a bit from Pirates of Penzance) to tell a then-modern-day story about the movie industry. Also not a hit. Not sure if that counts as a jukebox musical since almost all the songs are all from one show — it’s more like when Mad Magazine would do, like, “Antenna on the Roof” or “West Coast Story”

The Off Broadway Clueless was so bad. I just remember Cher shopping and someone bringing out a shrug and she sang a bit of No Shrugs to the tune of No Scrubs.

This reminds me of mid 2000s musical parodies. Think the Todrick Hall Wizard of Oz video?

Tanz der Vampire is partially this, and to different levels. Jim Steinem used the music from a bunch of his previous songs for a good chunk of the show, but the lyrics range from extremely different to the very similar use of Total Eclipse of the Heart.

it's interesting, you think it would happen more often. I've always thought that among book/music/lyrics, the hardest one to get right is lyrics.

We Will Rock You alters a few lyrics. Radio Ga Ga for example. Even though it was written back in 2002/3 They're surprisingly even more topical today

Doesn’t Moulin Rouge do this to some extent? Roxanne in the musical only borrows some of its lyrics from the original song.

An absolutely fascinating spin on this is Ken Hill's Phantom of the Opera. It never had a Broadway run, though. But basically, Hill wrote original English lyrics to opera pieces by composers like Mozart, Verdi, and Gounod. It's a really cool way to tell the story, imo!
