@elly.psychologist: Three traits, seen together and sustained over time, tend to say far more about whether emotional abuse is happening in a relationship than any single conversation ever could. The first is a near total inability to self-reflect, not occasional defensiveness, which everyone experiences sometimes, but a consistent pattern of denial and deflection instead of a simple I did this and I am sorry, and this specific behaviour is one of the clearest early markers of emotional abuse because it leaves you feeling confused rather than actually heard. The second trait is a particular kind of double standard connected to emotional abuse, where someone can treat other people poorly without much consequence, yet genuinely believe they deserve exceptional treatment themselves, expecting everyone to drop everything the moment they need something regardless of how little that same consideration ever flows back the other way, and they do not just act entitled, they actually believe it is fair. The third trait is often the hardest to catch, because rather than overriding empathy, this form of emotional abuse works by exploiting it directly, showing up as a victim mentality, everyone is against them, they have suffered so much, they are only trying their best, which can be genuinely disarming, especially if you are naturally empathic, because visible distress that looks believable in the moment makes comfort feel automatic, even when it comes at the cost of your own feelings. None of these traits alone proves emotional abuse is happening, but sustained together over a long period, they describe a pattern extremely unlikely to change without serious, long term professional help, which is exactly why understanding emotional abuse clearly enough to recognise the pattern matters more than trying harder to fix it through patience or better communication. My ex was and is still like this. It was so damaging in the relationship and is frustrating now I’m out of it and he continues the same behaviour. Protect yourself and get out safely because no matter what they tell you, they can’t/wont/don’t want to change. They use your sympathy, empathy and guilt to keep you where they want you - to your detriment.

My wife is like this. Everything is always my fault. One of our kids fell down and scraped their knee playing outside while she was watching them and it was my fault because I didn’t get home from work fast enough to help watch them lol it’s so dumb

What about if the other person accuse of all three, but you are not like these, and you constantly end up apologizing for everything is happening in the relationship? You have problem at work and she will tell you it is because of your faulty personality and how your parents raised you. Telling you that it is your fault that you never apologized for things that you did not need to apologies because you did nothing wrong, you were just trying to stand up for yourself. But then they will tell you that yeah you do not see that you did wrong because you are bad. So you end up apologizing for who you are constantly, she will make you promise to change big parts of you because they are not socially acceptable. (Mind that no one of your previous relationship ever said anything about it). But you kinda believe it, because yeah you had some altercation at work, you are developing severe anxiety, your parents are weird people, so she is probably right that I was not good and good enough for her. So yeah you need to change or she will leave you

So my ex said to me he deserved to be treated better after I caught him cheating with cam girls a two year period. He was suffering apparently and I said things (the truth) to hurt me that’s when my heart switched off

The navigation you need to do is get the hell out of the relationship. It took me 23 years to figure it out. I don't wish this on anyone.

Yes yes yes & why it took me so long to see if for what it was. He would cause something & yet it was then me that ended up comforting him. Eventually the crocodile tears didn’t wash with me & the woah me or trying to make me jealous. 3 years free after 15 years & it’s taken me along time to process everything but I think I am finally at a point now where I’m almost healed
