@shannonschott.esq: Replying to @Baron Wynter786 jury duty is so incredibly important and I hope that we will all think differently about what it means to serve moving forward. #lindsayclancystory #lindsayclancy #lindseyclancy #lindsayclancytrial #lindseyclanceymurdertrial

The only reason I would ever want to get out of jury duty is because I can’t afford it. Seven weeks of $50 a day doesn’t cover bills… legal systems need to compensate jurors at 55% of their gross wages.

I’ve never understood why people want to get out of jury duty. I got pulled for jury selection once and I was hoping to be selected but my name wasn’t called. I would be honoured to serve on a jury.

Why are jurors paid so poorly?

I think the first line to better quality jurors is paying more than $50 a day and expecting someone to takeoff upwards of seven weeks of their life plus calling off from work, kids etc. in today’s economy. Not to mention the emotional weight too. The bias in this country, I think also makes it hard for jury to be impartial in general, coupled with the brain rot of individuals that just believe blindly what they’re told and lack critical thinking. Crazy times. I agree that the jury system is important to our society, but I think we have outgrown it as a country.

If you spent MONTHS going to the ER with chest pain and shooting arm pain, begging doctors to believe something was wrong, and they kept sending you home with meds and “it’s anxiety”… then your spouse left you alone with 3 kids and made you drive in debilitating pain anyway, and you had a heart attack behind the wheel, crashed, and all 3 kids died while you somehow survived, would you call that MURDER? Or a catastrophic medical emergency everyone failed to take seriously?

They have got to start paying jurors better or federally mandated paid jury duty leave.

I fully understand and agree that serving on a jury is a duty and maybe even a privilege. I considered going to law school, and took a lot of classes in undergrad toward that goal. Constitutional law, evidence, legal ethics, etc. I would happily serve. Except that I literally can’t. I’m a single mom. I can’t miss that much work and not be paid. If we want people to serve willingly we need a system that allows them to be there without the pressure of missing work and needing childcare. It’s just not realistic to ask people to do their civic duty to the detriment of their whole life and family’s wellbeing. 🤷🏼‍♀️The last time I was called the judge was amazing. I would have loved to serve in his federal courtroom and I told him so, but I couldn’t and he excused me.

Agree however - we must provide more for our jurors. Most people, specifically peers, can’t afford jury duty and/or don’t have sufficient child care. This is entirely a systemic issue through and through. Most of my cases are bench trials, but the few jury trials I’ve done it’s near impossible to get a solid selection of people to be able to participate. Not that they were unwilling, but more or less - unable.

I agree that jury duty is super important. However, in my county, the wasted time is the biggest inconvenience. Some jurisdictions around me have text notifications and other electronic means to communicate with or inform potential jurors. I sat in a room for 4 days straight with 40 other people from 8am-5pm with only a 30 minute break for lunch for them to decide whether or not the case was even going to go to trial and whether or not they would need us for jury selection. On the end of day 4, the defense plead and we were dismissed with our $12/day on a prepaid debit card. I feel bad if they would’ve tried to select anyone from that room because they were all pissed to even be there.

Unfortunately, jury duty is a huge financial burden on most people. In Alaska, state of Alaska employees get paid their full, normal paycheck while on jury duty and the state keeps that’s pathetic $12 or whatever a juror gets. Either give everyone their full paychecks, or only require state employees to pull jury duty (others could volunteer still)

I’m Canadian so this could be different but my dream is to be on a jury and see the legal system from the inside. I actually got a jury summons a few months ago and I was very excited and honoured. However it required me to take 4+ days off with only 25$/day compensation. I work seasonally so big money daily but only in short bursts. I just could not afford to lose 2000$+ of wages to be on the jury. It was such a bummer and I think providing people better compensation would make for much fairer representation. As it stands mostly high earners or retired people become jurors which leads to a much less diverse jury.

I would love to serve. As self-employed and a single mom on a single income There’s just no way financially I could do it or recover from it. They really need to pay jurors a living wage during their time.

People these days are so unreasonable and opinionated. They’re unable to listen and hear both sides and state the facts. I just know if I was ever on trial I’d be so nervous for the group of people the scooped up 😂😭

I was on a manslaughter jury and it made me realize I never ever want my future in the hands of a jury of my peers, unfortunately. We had one absolute jerk of a holdout that ruined everything

My biggest issue with jury duty is that it doesn’t pay enough to live. They should pay people at least an hourly minimum wage for jury duty. I feel so badly for these people who spent over a month without being paid appropriately just for this trial to end in a mistrial 😩

Well the problem is - we can’t afford it. The Lindsay Clancy trial would have put me in a position to where I couldn’t pay my mortgage..🥴 if the state would pay to replace our salary while we served on a jury - there would be no problem.

Then we should pay jurors a livable stipend. And make sure they get adequate gas compensation & job protection & job security when they return to work.

My poor dad was on a murder case jury 20 years ago and this year the case was overturned due to a crooked cop who offed himself after it came out that he fudged many cases. My dad suffered terrible nightmares for years all for it to mean nothing.

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who actually gets excited when I get my jury duty summons in the mail... I served once when I was a lot younger and loved it. I was over the moon the one time I got summoned for Federal jury duty and crushed when it was canceled 😭😭

we need laws that require employers to continue to pay our wages and insurance premiums. When your employer doesn't pay your wages and that results in you not being able to afford your Healthcare premiums, thus loosing your health insurance, and you also can't afford your bills, that is unjust and a valid reason for not wanting to serve on a jury
