@elly.psychologist: Trying to get someone who consistently refuses to hear you to finally hear you can feel a lot like fighting your way out of a spider's web, and this comparison captures something real about how emotional abuse actually works, because each manipulation tactic functions like a different thread, and the more you struggle against it, the more entangled you become rather than less. Engaging feels like the natural response when you are dealing with emotional abuse and desperate to be understood, but with someone repeatedly using manipulation to avoid accountability, engagement does not loosen the web at all, it feeds it, because there is always another thread being spun the second you address the last one, rationalising, playing the victim, catastrophising, threatening, each one arriving from a slightly different angle. The actual purpose of that endless cycle of emotional abuse is rarely about winning any specific argument, it is simply to wear you down until you stop having feelings altogether, until your needs start to feel unwelcome enough that you eventually go quiet, and once you can see emotional abuse operating that clearly, disengaging starts to make a lot more sense, because it is not the same as swallowing your feelings or accepting the way you are being treated, it is refusing to keep supplying material to something that was never actually built to resolve anything. What genuinely helps when you are living with this kind of emotional abuse is not a sharper argument, it is somewhere else entirely to put those feelings, people who will simply hear your side without judging you, without making excuses for whoever is hurting you, and without trying to explain your own relationship back to you, because that is the real difference between being silenced by emotional abuse and actually being heard. That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to do… I keep explaining, over and over again, what hurts me in our relationship, but he never seems to see anything wrong until I’m already crying and having to explain myself all over again. Then he’ll flip the whole thing around and say things like, “See, you’re the problem,” or “I can’t talk to you when you’re shouting all the time.” Or he’ll say, “Do you ever wonder why I don’t even like spending time with you?” He always finds a way to justify his own behavior, whether it’s the silent treatment, ignoring me, or treating me like I’m not even his partner…instead of actually taking responsibility for how his actions affect me.

I left it too late to leave. At 58, I decided that I want to live what is left of my life. I have stopped trying to 'make-it-work' - I'm non-confrontational by nature and he's drilled it into me that I must never, ever, ever answer him back nor argue, so I remained silent. Nowadays, when I'm doing whatever I want, he would do anything to get me to engage with his rants, but I refuse to listen. He knows he's lost me for good

My issue is my parents were immature and judgmental so that’s why I was vulnerable to someone who lovebombs then discards. But what you’re saying about them not listening not empathising is so true.

From a recent experience, where I tried to explain, repeatedly, calmly, passionately, in detail, not in so much detail… with boundaries, without boundaries, these people just don’t want to know. They think that your concern is an opinion and I was told ‘I disagree with what you’re saying’. I tried boundaries, but I didn’t follow through because I was afraid of losing him. That really didn’t help my case. Because why would he admit fault when I’ll stay anyway? Now, apparently, he doesn’t want a relationship. It’s all too much for him. What I’m trying to say, if you have no friends, BE your own friend and do yourself a favour and stop everything. 5 years of this and I stupidly kept fighting… for what? You’ll just keep explaining until one of you cracks.. and usually it’s the partner - and you’re left with a lot of hurt and having to then fix your own self.

what if you dont have any friends or family, how are you supposed to go to a safe space then. Trying to get a therapist appointment is like pulling teeth. might be good advice, but not always feasible.

in my humble opinion, it is the responsibility of both that communication can even happen in a safe way. One to share in a way which isn't hurtful. Without accusations, guessing, shouting, throwing things around, but observation instead of evaluations. And the other ones to listen to understand and not to defend without interrupting, pulling the conversation to their story immediately, me-too defending, or get triggered and start to shout, leaving the conversation never coming back. It's so easy to believe and get convinced it's the others pattern, when we all still have so much to learn about our own behavior and take responsibility for it.

My husband is currently on a month long holiday in Jamaica that I’m not invited to. His communication is totally lacking and I’m anxiously attached and over time he has become completely avoidant. I then lash out via text cause he won’t answer my calls and then I get blocked. Then we end up speaking again on his terms, I apologise for everything. Then the exact same thing happens again. His last text to me was saying he is done and nobody can deal with my 💩 and that he’s tried and that’s all he can do and then blocked me on everything imaginable

Transformation 70 :
After 11 years and counselling I now it was a waste of my time. Transparency was an issue, always hinging something. My last straw was when there was a lack of transparency he told me he can choose what he tells me n when! He didn’t listen to a counsellor or my over explaining for years to try to get him to take accountability, to validate how it made me feel or at least apologise. His face going red, hands in the air shaking saying sorry fir yet again not being transparent abc then focusing on my reaction to that was just drama no me n dragging me down.

I did retaliate for years and I always looked like the bad one every time. So many people believed it because he didn’t act the same when nobody was around. I decided okay let it go and listen but if it’s worth talking about talk if they want a reaction just stay calm and silent and say are you feeling better now ?

You’re talking about narcissists here. They are the only people who repeatedly deny accountability and always lay the blame at your door making you doubt yourself.
