The bōsōzoku (暴走族) are part of a famous Japanese youth subculture known for motorcycle gangs and heavily modified cars and bikes with extravagant, rebellious designs. The movement emerged in the 1950s, reflecting the frustration of postwar Japanese youth. It was influenced by war veterans and the earlier Kaminari-zoku movement. The bōsōzoku reached their peak in 1982, with more than 42,000 members organized into groups and clans across Japan. Their decline began in the 2000s, as stricter traffic laws and increased police crackdowns made it much harder for the groups to operate.
