And this is exactly why women are terrified to speak up. After I had my first baby, I genuinely believed she was a robot. I won’t even go into the rest of the thoughts I was having at the time. But I loved my baby more than anything, and I was also aware enough to know that if I told someone what was going through my head, it would alarm them. I was terrified it would lead to me being hospitalised and separated from the baby I loved, despite everything my mind was telling me. So I told absolutely no one. I went to sleep every night sobbing, genuinely believing I wouldn’t wake up the next morning cause the robots were coming to get me. I lived with that fear in complete silence because I was more afraid of what might happen if I asked for help. Eventually, things started to get better and I slowly came to realise that what I had believed wasn’t reality. Thank God I improved rather than deteriorated, because looking back now, I realise just how differently things could have gone. And that’s the problem. Women experiencing terrifying thoughts after having a baby need to feel safe enough to tell someone what is happening in their head without immediately fearing that honesty will cost them their baby.

We’re in a capitalistic patriarchal system that’s completely unnatural to motherhood and post partum. In other societies mothers are surrounded by other women or entire families to help with the baby. Not be left completely alone after a huge birth to care for a new born. No women around her bc they’re all in work unless you’re lucky enough to find one on maternity leave too. Families moving miles away from each other because of a housing crisis: even to other continents.

you can still get psychosis that's not "post partum psychosis " after childbirth because prolonged depression can trigger psychosis then there's post partum thyroiditis some women get psychotic symptoms when they are in the hyperthyroidism and hypo phase

I’m a midwife and I remember a patient I looked after was readmitted with postnatal psychosis. The difference in her in only a short space of time was so scary. I often think about how she got on after being transferred out to a specialised unit ❤️
