FYI, for those who seem to be terribly worried about this family using their local food pantry - that's what they're there for. If they're a USDA pantry every person counted adds to their TEFAP allotment and the food pantry gets more free food to supplement what they have to buy or what gets donated. If they do Partner Pickup (which it appears they do, based on the Publix produce) that food HAS to go. Fresh produce doesn't last long, if people don't show up to get it then it will end up as compost.
I use 5 days past as a guideline for donated milk, do a sniff test, or a taste test, definitely throw it out if there are signs of swelling or leakage.
For y'all who are complaining about moldy or expired foods, look around for a JUSTICE FOR ALL poster. If they're a USDA pantry they're required to have one, and you can call and report that they're giving out moldy food. Some pantries are, some aren't, but if they are they have to have the poster posted and a complaint form near it, available to anyone who asks. Believe me, I've heard some horror stories about how some pantries are run, safer to let someone know and get it straightened out. A sell by date and am expiration date are different, and there are guidelines for what is acceptable past those dates. It's easily found on the internet.
