The effect can occur while a noise-control mode such as Active Noise Cancellation or Transparency is operating and the earbud’s microphones are obstructed or acoustically coupled to its speaker. AirPods Pro use external and internal microphones along with their speaker to continuously measure and control sound. Covering the earbud can drastically change the acoustic environment around those components, allowing sound from the speaker to feed back into a microphone and potentially creating a brief high-frequency feedback loop. The principle is similar to the familiar squeal produced when a live microphone and loudspeaker interact, although it occurs on a much smaller scale inside the earbud’s audio-control system. It demonstrates how changing the acoustic path around microphones and speakers can destabilize an otherwise carefully controlled feedback system. No copyright infringement intended.
