My mandelic acid hot take ! This is simply my opinion based on 9 years as an esthetician focused on corrective skincare + what I’ve personally observed treating acne over the years. Mandelic acid has its place. I just think it’s overused.. I think the rise in popularity has also created a lot of broad recommendations for mandelic as an acne treatment, when different types of acne need different approaches. And I think this becomes especially difficult when a professional’s acne education comes primarily from the skincare line they were trained in. If the hero product doesn’t work, do you understand why it isn’t working and know how to pivot? Personally, mandelic is not one of my first choices for many acne presentations. Benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, salicylic acid, azelaic acid and sulfur are ingredients I reach for far more often! I’m not saying mandelic is bad or that it doesn’t work. I just think we need to understand our ingredients well enough to recognize when the popular recommendation isn’t the right recommendation for the skin in front of us 🫶🏻 What are your thoughts on mandelic acid ?
