@intentional.anna: what taking adhd medication for the first time can actually feel like 🤍 a lot of people build it up as this huge, scary thing — like one pill is going to completely rewrite their brain. so when they start on a low dose, they brace to feel basically nothing. and then, for some, it’s like… zoom. a strange, quiet kind of focus — the ability to sit down and actually do the thing, without the brain sprinting in fourteen directions at once. that stillness can be genuinely emotional when you’ve never felt it before. (one thing that trips people up: stimulants like methylphenidate can affect sleep, so timing matters — an afternoon dose can quietly cost you a night’s rest.) none of this means medication is the answer for everyone. every brain and body responds differently, dosing is deeply personal, and it’s a conversation for you and your doctor — never the internet. but if you’ve spent your whole life white-knuckling your focus and wondering why it’s so hard, here’s the gentle reminder: you’re not broken. sometimes the right support just turns the noise down. 💬 if you’re late-diagnosed and navigating this, share your experience below — what surprised you most? save this for someone who needs to hear that needing help isn’t failing. #adhdinwomen #adhdmedication #latediagnosedadhd #neurodivergent #adhdawareness

Oh yeah. Diagnosed at 19 so suffered my whole life for basically no reason, but I thought that was just the norm. Didn’t think I had ADHD nor needed pills but my doctor begged me to just try after we discovered I had a huge genetic trait for ADHD. It was like I had reached nirvana in my mind. Totally quiet. Paradoxically the best anxiety medication I’ve ever tried. Better than Diazepam. I couldn’t believe life could be so easy and quiet. It felt like I had gained superpowers. Absolutely on top of the world. I didn’t go manic, it didn’t make me high (of course), and I was still able to think clearly and rationally and remained sane, but the focus and concentration and executive function was like no other. I couldn’t believe it. A whole new world opened up for me when I started being able to concentrate. I could do things I had wanted to do before but couldn’t because my mind kept directing my attention away from it. Ever since then I’ve been doing a lot of things but the biggest thing I started to do was reading. I read all the time now. All day everyday. I read and read and read. I read about history. I read about politics. I read online and in books. I can’t stop reading. Reading is one of those things that ADHD completely ruins. Normally I’d read something but not really read it and I’d have to repeat the same sentence multipe times to actually grasp I am reading (those who get it get it), but now it’s just flawless focus. I also picked up card magic and cardistry which is something I had been wanting to learn for years but could never focus and ultimately discarded after a day. After my 2nd day of trying to learn it (this time on meds) I had learned the fan, swing cut, charlie cut, waterfall, faro shuffle, spring, riffle, scissor cut and multipe false cuts and multiple sleights and even began working on my first trick (with my own variation and presentation) like it was nothing. And I am still doing cardistry. Still, everyday, because getting over that first hurdle of learning that ADHD made so difficult made me never wanna stop. I still practice everyday. I can sit for hours and practice and lose track of time like it’s nothing. I can do it while watching TV
