This was flipped on its head for me recently. For a long time I thought about it the same way you do here. But think about flipping them. Here’s why: pretérito focuses on the COMPLETION of the action. Therefore, use a movie to see the action from beginning to end. Then, the imperfect focuses on the ACTION ITSELF. So, it’s more like a photo. There’s no beginning or end, just the action sitting there in the still frame. This idea comes from Campillo and his cognitive grammar concepts. Give it a look if you want to explore it more! Either way, keep up the good content! 👏
