My understanding is that the United States cannot simply send the FBI into Nigeria to arrest or investigate someone as if Nigeria were U.S. territory. Nigeria is a sovereign country, just as the United States is sovereign. If the FBI needs to investigate something involving Nigeria, it normally has to work through Nigerian authorities and established international legal channels. The FBI does have international partnerships and works with Nigerian law enforcement, but that is different from having independent police powers inside Nigeria. (Department of Justice) So when people say, “The U.S. came to Nigeria and arrested someone,” I think we need to be very careful about what actually happened. If there was an arrest in Nigeria, it would be important to establish whether Nigerian authorities were involved and what legal authority was used. Let’s stick to the facts rather than making claims that are not supported by the law.
