Your thumb should be across from your middle finger, not up :) it will soften your line. You also want your elbow lower than your shoulder and wrist below that, so a water drop could run off your shoulder, down your arm and off your fingers

Hold your arms in firstand think of gently pressing down with your elbows and putter edge of your hands to find your back muscles. Then try to find that feeling in second (to the side). The shape of your arm doesn’t change from one position to the other.

A question I asked my instructor that helped me a lot with arms in second is “what should my scapula be doing.” I can try to explain but getting the in person feedback/demo is probably much more helpful

The lift of your arm comes from the back of your shoulder blade. When you think about it that way, it softens and naturally lifts the elbow. Also, when you hold the bar, your thumb should always be on top of the bar, not gripping around it and keep your elbow down by your side.
