Sleep anxiety is not only about having trouble sleeping. It is often about what being awake starts to mean. You might notice thoughts like: “What if I don’t sleep tonight?” “How am I going to function tomorrow?” “What if this keeps happening?” “Should I go to bed earlier?” “Should I cancel something tomorrow?” “Do I need to try something else?” Over time, sleep can start to feel like something you need to monitor, protect, and MAKE happen. That is where the cycle can become difficult. The more important sleep feels in the moment, the more attention you may give it. You might watch the clock, calculate how many hours are left, stay in bed trying harder, change your plans the next day, or keep searching for another thing that might help. Unfortunately, sleep is not something we can force through effort. A few things I often encourage people to work on instead: Try to reduce clock-watching when you can. Go to bed when you are genuinely sleepy, rather than going earlier because you are worried about getting enough sleep. Keep a fairly consistent wake time, including after a difficult night. If you are awake in bed and becoming frustrated or very alert, it can help to get up and do something quiet until sleepiness returns. And perhaps most importantly, try not to let one difficult night decide what tomorrow is going to look like. You can be tired and still continue with much of your day. The goal is not to stop caring about sleep. It is to help sleep take up less space in your mind, so your body has more room to do what it already knows how to do. I’m Tony Ho, MSW, RSW, an insomnia therapist and Registered Social Worker. I share practical, science-backed support for chronic insomnia and sleep anxiety. Follow @quadrawellness for more.
