A lot of people like to compare the trade deficit the US has with Mexico as a negative for the US, but what they fail to realize is that comparing raw numbers is completely misleading. If you look at it relative to the size of each economy, the picture changes entirely. According to official data, imports make up a massive 37.6 percent of Mexico's entire GDP, while imports only account for about 13.8 percent of US GDP. Even though Mexico has a smaller economy, trade is a much bigger part of our system. On a personal level, imported goods only make up about 10 percent of an average US consumer's total household expenses. In contrast, the average Mexican spends an 18 percent of their personal income on foreign goods. So, what does all this mean? Mexico benefits more overall but that's only because our economy is smaller.
