The system is broken when they are telling parents who is making the reports.

Also, if she DID NOT report it and something happened. She would be in trouble.

As a mandated reporter myself, this is always hard. People don’t understand the position we are in

the way a kid would say that the parent didn't give them any food, and it'd be a refrigerator full for food, but they want chicken nuggets lol

Mandated reporters have to report ANY suspicion of abuse or neglect. Period.

Hot Mess Mama :
As a former daycare teacher, I one time watched a mom come into the pre-K classroom and the teacher told her that her son (who had a very bad temper and a lot of behavioral issues ) had not had a very good day. We had an open concept floor plan, so there were no walls ,no doors for each classroom. This Mom took off her belt in the middle of the classroom and started whipping him with her belt ….while parents were walking in coming to get their kids , all the kids in the classroom were watching and all the teachers around were watching and were horrified. I had to run in and go get My Boss from the office who had to stop her and then call CPS. Come to find out that CPS didn’t in the end do anything about it at all.

I had a CPS case. I got my kiddo back. I just dont understand why they wont tell you who reported it. If there are concerns about my kiddo, id rather be told to my face then behind my back.

Unenroll your child expeditiously. Leave a wonderful review. File whatever complaints with the state

I had my niece with kinship care, bc “mom” gave her bruises. Months later, she talked about it at school, told them “mommy gave me lots of bruises on my butt”. Someone called and started a new case. Ok cool, you would think they have all the notes? NOPE. They started a new investigation, and assumed I was “mom”, didn’t look at her butt (I guess because we said yea she had bruises before). We didn’t know they assumed I was mom until they literally told me to stand up and turn around. That’s when I was like…wait, I’m not mom, I have custody bc “mom” gave her bruises. We had to call the caseworker to talk to the new caseworker. It was so scary. They really don’t investigate well.

If the something happens to the child the teacher could be held liable.

the problem with talking to the guardian first is that you never know if they're going to punish the child for whatever they said or start hiding any evidence. you're not trained to find out if someone is lying or if their story doesn't add up and sometimes the abuser is really good at hiding it.

I was once a mandated reporter. I hated it. I never reported anything'. I was always afraid of overreacting and differentiating perception from reality.

Some people in the comments don’t understand: as childcare providers, we are mandated reporters. It’s not that we want to report, and truthfully it’s a terrifying process. But we HAVE to report, because what if those little flags end up being something serious and a child gets hurt, and we did nothing to help? It is always safer to report in good faith and be wrong than to not report and have that gut feeling be right and a child gets hurt or worse.

If she didn’t do anything why is she so mad she should be thankful to have a safe person who belives a child instead of brushing it off

As a fellow mandatory reporter, thank you. There doesn’t need to be a ‘part 1’ guys, it’s a baseline requirement for too many good reasons even if it makes you mad.

the one time I called the lady on the phone said something like "hu, it doesn't look like we've ever gotten a report about them before" and that's when I learned that most "mandatory reporters" don't actually report
