I was working security at Breathless Montego Bay, on the bridge connecting it to Secrets. The bridge was usually where they placed the newer employees—the rookies. One day, a white male guest was walking across the bridge. Like always, I greeted him with a smile because that’s part of the job. As he passed me, he looked at me and said, “All you need now is a chain.” My smile immediately disappeared. I was shocked. Flabbergasted. I didn’t even know how to respond or what I was supposed to do in that moment. And this is what bothers me: people will travel to predominantly Black countries, enjoy our beaches, our culture, our hospitality, our money, and our beautiful people—and still bring their racism and hatred with them. If you hate Black people so much, why do you keep coming to our countries???? You don’t get to enter someone else’s home, disrespect them, and then act like your racism is just a harmless joke.
