It honestly can happen at anytime of year that it’s warm ( like not freezing ) It’s based on the wind direction. If it’s from the west or southwest they will be on the beach.

when the west winds are blowing it brings then outta the marshes and onto the beaches and whatnot. they are pesky little things. I have found Off deep woods with the higher deet (i think 40%) tends to keep them off me.

Anytime the wind comes from the sound, the flies do too, good day to go fish the sound for a few hours.

They are called bitting flies on the beach, and inland we have yellow flies and the big black ones are called horse flies

We were just there. Watch the winds before you go out. They are miserable. SSS sprayed around our chairs and feet helped when the wind was blowing from the W.
