Nestled in the Apuseni Mountains, this ancient site is home to the “Sfânta Cruce din Orlea” gallery, an emblem of the area’s extensive gold mining history. Carved in the early 19th century, this gallery stretches eastward into the Vaidoaia massif and branches southeast towards the Carnic massif. What makes it unique is the stone cross etched into the left wall, marking the largest gold vein in Rosia Montana, a testament to the miners’ enduring faith and hard work. Rosia Montana is not just a relic of Romania’s past but a vivid narrative of over 2,000 years of continuous mining. Known in Roman times as Alburnus Maior, the area boasts the most extensive network of Roman gold mines in the world. The Romans extracted approximately 500 tons of gold here between 106 and 271 CE, creating over seven kilometers of intricate underground galleries and advanced engineering works like water-dipping wheels for drainage. These historical mines have left a labyrinthine legacy beneath the mountains, described by locals as resembling Swiss cheese due to the extensive network of tunnels from different eras.
