The ovens hummed behind me. Then I heard it. Step. I looked toward the dining room. Nothing. Step. Another one. Slow. Heavy. I checked the front door. Locked. “Probably the cooler,” I whispered. I ran for the front. The locked door wouldn’t move. I pulled harder. Behind me, a cabinet opened. Then another. Then another. Metal trays clattered onto the floor. I turned. The thing was standing beside the ovens. It had arms that reached almost to its knees. Its skin looked pale under the fluorescent lights. Its face was turned away from me. Then its head rotated. Not its body. Just its head. Until it was looking directly at me. My phone rang. I answered without thinking. My manager was whispering. “Listen to me.” I couldn’t speak. “Whatever you do, don’t let it hear you say your name.” The thing took one step. I covered my mouth. Step. It took another. Step. They searched the building. Nothing. No broken door. No creature. No footprints. One officer pulled me aside. He looked uncomfortable. “There’s something you should see.” He showed me the security footage. The cameras had recorded everything. Me waiting. Me reading the receipt. Me running. But there was no creature. Instead, the footage showed me standing alone beside the ovens. Talking to empty air. Then the officer paused the video. “Look here.” He zoomed in.
