My partner is Filipino and his parents will start yelling at him for something that either didn’t happen or go the way and then bring him like food and expect that to be the healing point. Now when I have an argument with him he just shuts down and I feel bad because he wasn’t taught to learn to talk about his emotions

This!! I always said sorry and felt bad everytime I got in any trouble. but I never got an apology back. I used to be jealous in kids cartoons and shows when an argument happens, later the parent will go to the kid and apologize and admit the faults they caused :(

i gave up confronting and dealing with them. i just dont bother dealing w it anymore. they prioritize being right and defending themselves and you'll just waste your time. anything you say, whatever it is, will come off as nothing else but an attack to themselves 🫠 sucking the frustration in instead of wasting my energy just trying to be HEARD(not even to be agreed with) when it would always end in more disappointment, is much better. i hope it's not like this for everyone but this is the conclusion I've come to over the years, and my life has been much better to deal with just not trying to deal with them and acknowledging that we'll never see eye to eye on most if not all things. hugs to every one of us who deals with/dealt with this type of household 💙

Guys I genuinely can’t do it anymore. I hate myself so much because of my family and starting to hate being Filipino because of things like this. Why are they like this???? I have soooo SO much hatred for my parents. THEY NEVER SAY SORRY AT ALL NO MATTER WHAT. I have broken down so many times because my dad is just like this and my mom just enables him and doesn’t even show any kind of concern or tell him to act right at all and I’m expected to just “forgive him because he’s just like that.” The Filipino men are worse. Atleast my mom apologizes when she knows she’s in the wrong when we get into arguments, but my dad? Hell no. But it’s not even just my parents, it’s so many people in my family. I wish it wasn’t so goddamn normalized in Filipino culture.

After I literally just posted about the argument I had with my mother 4 days ago. They never admit when they’re wrong and they’re definitely not gonna apologize. They either move on and pretend they didn’t say all the hurtful comments or expect you to apologize for calling them out. Then she gets upset that I’m not smiling and happy because we’re going out to church or her friend’s party, right after she made me feel like shit!

This is exactly why I've never learned how to properly apologize to people or address conflict 😭 and it's been such a pain growing up especially when it comes to friendships. Now I'm learning how to do that because regardless of how I was raised,its MY responsibility to change.

and truthfully i cant imagine my family any other way i fear. I will happily break the cycle with my own partner and/or family, but for my parents? it's not worth the effort of trying to rewrite decades of their habits and wiring 😔
