The forceful spray indicates substantially more tank pressure than the small pressure changes normally encountered when opening a fuel system. Gasoline constantly produces vapor, and higher temperatures can increase vapor generation and tank pressure. Modern fuel systems manage these vapors through an evaporative-emissions system rather than simply venting them to the atmosphere. If the tank’s venting path is restricted, malfunctioning, or otherwise unable to relieve pressure properly, excessive pressure can accumulate. The dramatic release should not be described simply as “vapor lock,” which traditionally refers to fuel vaporization disrupting fuel delivery to an engine. Here, the important phenomenon is fuel-tank pressurization: heat and volatile gasoline can contribute to the pressure, while abnormal venting is one possible reason it becomes severe enough to eject liquid fuel when the cap is opened.
