The metaphor is way better when it’s in a shared superhero universe. Other superheroes being loved and revered, while the X-Men are hated just because their mutants is what makes it work. It’s way easier to sympathize with anti-mutant supporters when mutants are the only super powered populace

It works but only in context of a larger marvel universe. It works when you have a public embrace heroes that obtain their powers through science or magic but fear the ones that were born with it. Ironically the X-Men’s identities are all known while the majority of the other superheroes hide their identities yet the X-Men are feared more. In the fox films where there are no other heroes I agree with you, but not where other heroes are concerned

having a gun is a choice. being a mutant isnt....thats the point. its an extreme example. they were treating mutants as weapons to be "registered" and not people. it completely works.

It’s important to note that there’s like, 20 million mutants. X-men stories focus on the 0.001% that are powerful. The average mutant just has like, an extra kidney or really long hair.

Heavily disagree. The analogy still works because the dangerous mutants are actually a minority compared to the overall mutant population, Xavier’s school has a few really powerful people who regularly go on missions but the remaining 90% of the students have harmless mutations that would give them zero advantages even in a knife fight. And yet in the xmen world people despise mutants just because they’re born like that and because they saw a few dangerous examples on tv which makes them think that’s how all mutants are. Gee I wonder what real life situation also has people generalizing like this?🤔

This is only the case if you have 0 context for why the government is inherently untrustworthy or how much of a parallel it is to civil rights. If you have any understanding of history or civil rights that isn't the blanched whitewashed propaganda they schlep at children, it only becomes more prescient. Also it's wild to say "sure, the government will use this to do a genocide, but some of these minorities are dangerous. and wouldn't all the white middle class people feel safer if they were imprisoned?" like it's not at all analogous to how real world systems of oppression have been created.

the comparison between mutants and minoritys is so laughablely terrible. mutants are (unlike minoritys) not just normal people like the rest of us. they are terrifying suoerweapons that could wipe out a whole city block if the felt like it

Yes the allegory works. Government shouldn’t have a list of people because they’re different. Most mutants had harmless mutations, not any more dangerous than owning a gun for example. So government registry is overly broad.

horrible take, arguing that people are weapons is so dehumanising. it's really just the same argument that's always been used to justify discrimination. "these people are dangerous/ inferior / we should know about them so we can treat them differently"
