I've had my CDL for about 5 months noe and had my first DOT inspection last week. I started with "This is my truck. There are many like it but this one is mine" and I had the guy laughing his ass off. wasnt bad at all.

Legally you're not required to do a pre-trip for them. You can watch them so they don't fuck anything up. I assist because I don't want their feelings getting involved during the inspection. It just makes things go faster honestly.

anything without air/fluids: Not bent, cracked, broken or missing, securely mounted, no loose or missing nuts or bolts, operating properly. anything with air/fluid: securely mounted, no abrasions, bulges, or cuts, not leaking. at proper operating range.
