@silk.echo.jp: 1874 — Ichikawa Danjūrō as a Male Spirit (O-shōjō), by Toyohara Kunichika, portrays the celebrated kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX in Kotobuki Ninin Shōjō, performed at Tokyo’s Kawarazaki Theatre. Published in July, this woodblock print belongs to the tradition of yakusha-e, portraits celebrating actors and their theatrical roles. The shōjō is a mythical water-dwelling creature associated with sake, joyful dancing, and good fortune, giving the subject a celebratory character beneath its commanding appearance.
