@surgtech101: What’s the difference between a surgical tech and an OR nurse? One manages the sterile field, one coordinates the room, and both spend the day anticipating what everyone else needs before they ask. Same scrubs, different jobs… and no, the surgical tech is not “the nurse’s assistant.” 😂 #SurgicalTech #OperatingRoomNurse #OperatingRoom #creatorsearchinsights #worththesearch
I had a nurse, who didn't scrub tell me your job is so easy. she said you do everything the same way everytime so yes I could do it. I asked her what happens is the surgeon Knicks the bowel during a procedure? she said they bring in a different surgeon to fix it, i said yes, but the scrub doesn't change, we have to know every procedure, not just the one we started with. Her response was 'oh?'

I’m a circulator and scrub nurse- a good OR team has equal respect for all parts of the team.

finally! someone actually said it correctly without it being a tech vs nurse competition. most importantly, it's about the teamwork required to provide the patient care needed.

I was a scrub tech for 13 years. Scrubbed every service line. Came from the see one, do one, teach one era. It was the best job I never wanted (it was chosen for me by the military). Loved it. I’m in administration now but scrub every opportunity I get (yes, there is à competency). There should never be an us vs them. It’s all about the patient. Creator you did a good job.

I absolutely respect the Surgical Techs. We truly rely on the whole team. I am relatively new to the OR although I've been a nurse for nearly 25 years. I couldn't do it without the Surgical Techs. Yes, the patient is absolutely the top priority.

The other nurses in the hospital think we are not really nurses in the OR. I say we are more because we must not only handle the needs of the team and communicate with all the other people, but we think for the patient who is asleep and cannot articulate their needs. We are first line advocate!

You forgot the significant pay difference in CST vs OR RN or BSN.
And I don't want to hear from a 30 year CST vs a new grad nurse.
The pay CST vs Nurse is stupidly disrespectful.

I work in Sydney Australia and in my hospital there are no surgical techs. Both scrub and scout are nurses. I find it so interesting to see how the OR works in other countries 🙂

That we just “hand instruments”. Like our job doesn’t require an understanding of anatomy, procedures, microbiology and pharmacology even to a degree. Doctors get to have their one speciality. Scrubs and nurses have to be familiar and competent in every specialty.

I have worked both jobs over 45+ years. both are equally necessary....the more a nurse scrubs the better she becomes as a circulator. but one cant function without the other. a strong scrub can carry a newbie nurse. we need to lift each other up...not compete

I work in a country where surg techs don’t exist. OR nurses do their jobs. Would be cool if they also have that profession in here.

That’s its “soft” nursing. Yes, it’s not bedside, be we also aren’t sitting on our butts all day. On a slow day I’m getting 10,000 steps in. We are having to make sure sterility of the field, tech, and surgeon remain intact. We circulators have to multi task like crazy—chart, open stuff, answer phone calls, return pages all while everyone in the room is asking for stuff at the same dang time

OR Nurse here, trained in Saudi Arabia. I worked as either a Scrub or Circulating Nurse and sometimes as an X-ray Technician!😁 It was truly one of the most rewarding and fulfilling chapters of my nursing career. I learned so much, wore many hats and made memories that I will always treasure.

Yes, the Surgical Technologist is a valuable part of today’s surgical team. They are usually Certified, not Licensed. A Registered Nurse was the original training for the sterile role but due to lack of enough licensed nurses, the Surgical Tech role was created. RNs who circulate & scrub are valuable but less frequent. Surgical counts require at least one licensed employee. Not all surgeons or anesthesia providers are employees of a healthcare facility as the sterile scrub nurse or tech are, and therefore these employees must uphold best practices & policies for the safety of patients & the facility. Happy early Surg Tech week this month!
