Lockdowns shut businesses, travel collapsed, and millions of people suddenly lost work. At 4 is the 1973–75 recession, which was driven by oil shocks, inflation, and slowing economic growth. It helped create the era of stagflation, where prices rose even while the economy weakened. At 3 is the Great Recession of 2007–09. A housing bubble, risky lending, and a banking crisis pushed the financial system close to collapse. More than 8 million U.S. jobs were lost during the downturn. At 2 is the Long Depression, which began after the Panic of 1873. Bank failures, falling prices, bankruptcies, and weak growth dragged on for years. At 1 is the Great Depression, the most devastating economic collapse of the modern era. Businesses failed, banks collapsed, and unemployment reached extreme levels. U.S. unemployment peaked near 25 percent in 1933. These crises were caused by very different events, but all of them show how quickly financial problems can spread through the real economy.
