Gen Z, I know I don’t speak for all millennials but please know MANY of us were fighting to make the world better for you, especially when we saw y’all being blamed for things the way we were. I’m 35 and I miss how colorful the world was, as well as how connected I felt to the people around me. Checking on your friends used to mean going out or having a house party instead of checking a lifeless social media feed that’s not even showing you new things first anymore.

as an elder millennial, it felt that way for us too even then. but we refused to settle for the Grey and mundane. thats why millennial optimism was born. (we didnt call it that back then, we were just trying to make it out the other side)

Theres a YouTube channel that goes over all the good news for the month every month, yall should watch it. It really helps, genuinely

Im going to do that millennial thing where I give unsolicited advice but, I hope someone who needs to read this sees it. Everything is gray, sterile, and lifeless because of late stage capitalism. Creative media platforms became commercials. Algorithms manipulated to benefit capital owners. We are being fed curated ads from all angles that it’s hard to feel optimistic about anything when you’re constantly told that you’re not good enough, your hair isn’t good enough, your clothes aren’t good enough, if you’re not doing XYZ you aren’t good enough. When in reality, it’s all fucking lies and bullshit to keep you spending your money on useless shit. I hope if you make it this far you understand that everything tangible and material is replaceable and unnecessary. Money comes and it goes. What you will never get back is time, time with your family, time with your friends, time doing things that enrich and feed your soul. Open a notebook and write down something you love that is creatively based. Do you love art? Do you love gardening? Do you love books? Music? Write out a list, and make it a point to experience it without taking photos. Ask a friend and just go to a museum. You love flowers? Go to a botanical garden and look at what’s in front of you and reflect that the negative noise in your head was manipulation by CEOs to make you spend more money on shit you don’t need because assimilation starts when creativity dies. Just go out - find hobbies, have potlucks and picnics with friends, go to local shows, support local art. It’s all still out there we are all just stuck on our phones. I didn’t even know where my phone was in 2014.
