The color carries the character across three ages of his life without a word of explanation. The film won at the Oscars. Its scale is intimate, held close to faces and skin, never epic. Jenkins used a visual language built in Hong Kong to look at an American city, and the industry that usually reserves that language for art house romance followed him there.
