Hyperfixation = the calm before the storm. Locking on. Loading up. Huffy puffy. Staring like their life depends on it. All signs your dog is about to lose it, and fast. My goal isn’t just to let a dog see a trigger. I want them to observe it without spiraling. That means helping them disengage before things escalate. Here’s my go-to 4-step process: 1️⃣ Sound prompt – kiss noise or teeth click to break their focus. If they look at me, I mark and reward. 2️⃣ Physical touch – light leash tap or gentle touch to head, back, or legs. 3️⃣ Movement – if all else fails, move them. Turn, walk, redirect. But allow them to try again (we don’t leave and avoid) 4️⃣ Let it play out – once you’ve done the first three steps on repeat enough times, the dog knows the pattern. Now you give them the opportunity to make a choice, and you must be ready to follow through with a meaningful consequence if they choose incorrectly. This is how we prevent reactivity and build reliability. We’re not suppressing the reaction, we’re stopping the fixation before the spiral. Eventually, the dog learns: I can notice things… but I don’t need to lose my mind over them.
