Well, the word "polecat" comes from Old French (poule, meaning chicken) combined with "cat," originally meaning a "chicken-eating cat" because those European weasels raided farm Slang Legacy: Over time, the name stuck as a regional colloquialism, especially in the American South and Appalachia, where older generations still use "polecat" to describe a skunk—or as an insult for someone or something that smells bad. Coincidentally, my Dad - a first generation Scotsman, here - always used that term, for as long as I can remember…🤷🏼♂️😬
