derek, what you are experiencing here is something akin to the survivorship bias. In this example, the reason we associate clinically insane individuals with atrocities is because the clinically insane people who don't commit atrocities don't get noticed. We only ever hear of insanity when it is a threat. There are many people out there who would be considered insane or mentally ill, but are fantastic people. Unfortunately no one gafs about them because they aren't a threat

Actually mentally illness can be more then just bad people. Autism, & ADHD are only 2 of what doctors consider mental illnesses. Fact is most evil people have alot of anger in them from abuse, bullying, etc. Over time those people just snap.
