They deserved birthdays, first days of school, scraped knees, belly laughs, bad attitudes, teenage years, and entire lives ahead of them. I understand postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis are real. I understand mental health can get incredibly dark. And I absolutely believe parents need better support, doctors who listen, and the RIGHT help before things ever get this far. But three things can be true at the same time. Mental illness is real. The medical system can fail someone. And three innocent children still deserve justice. I also believe there need to be serious questions asked about the doctors treating her and the amount of medication she was being prescribed. If someone is clearly struggling that badly, throwing medication after medication at them isn't enough. Someone needed to recognize how serious this was and step in. But through all the arguments about her mental health, her doctors, medications, and whether she understood what she was doing, I don't want these babies to become an afterthought. Cora was 5. Dawson was 3. Callan was only 8 months old. They don't get another chance at life. They don't get to grow up. Their story ended that night. So yes, have the conversations about postpartum mental health. Hold doctors accountable when care fails. Fix a system that clearly needs fixing. But don't forget who actually lost everything. Cora.
