ANAK KRAKATAU ASH DISRUPTS HUNDREDS OF FLIGHTS A major eruption of Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano has caused widespread disruption to air travel, with around 516 flight movements affected as volcanic ash forced temporary suspensions and operational restrictions at six airports, including Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. At Soekarno-Hatta, volcanic ash was detected during repeated ground tests, prompting authorities to issue successive NOTAMs and extend the temporary closure. The latest extension kept the airport closed until 17:30 local time on Sunday. Earlier official figures showed 209 flight movements and 22,798 passengers affected at Soekarno-Hatta alone, with around 170 aircraft parked on the apron during the disruption. Indonesia’s meteorological agency, BMKG, said volcanic ash was spreading in two main clusters. SIGMET information showed ash reaching up to 50,000 feet west of the volcano and up to 20,000 feet to the east, creating a significant hazard for aviation across the region. The disruption has also affected operations at Halim Perdanakusuma, Radin Inten II, Budiarto and Pondok Cabe, among other airports, as authorities continue monitoring the movement of the ash cloud. Airlines have been adjusting schedules, delaying or cancelling flights as conditions evolve. Passengers traveling through Jakarta and other affected airports are being advised to check their flight status directly with their airline.
