Soaked beet pulp (no mollasses) free fed decent quality grass hay. No alfalfa. Stay away from sugary feeds or overly rich hay.

Get teeth done, buy good quality supplements, alfalfa pellets especially as they pack on the calories. And doing alot of slow ground work to help build muscle . look up bluebonnet feeds, they are really good brand for packing on weight for reasonable prices, my TB gained probly 100 pounds within 2 weeks on bluebonnet and alfalfa

tests need to be ran and husbandry needs to be evaluated if this happened while in your care. Cushings/PPID bloodwork, teeth floated, etc. Evaluate what youre feeding. Amount, quality, age of horse.

Get her teeth floated. TWH are my favorite breed, but they do seem to have dental issues.

Cracked corn with corn oil poured over the top. But, I definitely agree with a vet visit first to rule out any other issues.

A vet needs to evaluate the horse because if you "don't know what happened" there could be major issues that are much more serious than not enough calories

Get blood work, a fecal count and teeth checked/floated first. Once those things are addressed, you are looking at calories/nutrition. Alfalfa, a good fat supplement like ground flax, oil or rice bran and a good quality feed or ration balancer, and make sure he's not getting run off his feed by other horses.

I'm not going to get into any more details than this: the top photo is how I came back home to find my horse after someone I thought was a trusted friend "took care of him for me". This was his 6 month transformation after I surrendered/ gave him to another friend of mine who had asked to lease/ buy him in the past. Teeth checked (didn't need a float, so much as he needed some work done on his bad front tooth), Munga by Hygain + beet pulp, and LOTTTSSS of alfalfa. I have rehabbed horses before on a similar diet plan (forage based diet, beet pulp, lots of alfalfa, and rice bran. I will attach photos of my rescue before and after photos that I used that plan with breeds as well as their ages.) And if anyone's wondering, "well if you rescue horses, how come you gave him away?" I gave him away because I was at a point in time where I could not move him to my new state (650 miles away) with the shape he was in and I didn't have a safe place for him to go and stay in my ownership. So I acted in his best interest and placed him with someone who could (and does) give him everything he needs to be a happy healthy horse.

Alfalfa, a high fat/ high protein/ high fiber grain (like senior sport from Tribute), making sure it has constant access to hay

Samantha L Rothka :
it could be any number of things. I would have your vet out 1st. but it could be worms so a powerpack might be needed, it could be an infection somewhere, it could be a bad tooth, it could be something like your feeding regime.

KitKat :
alfalfa, free choice grass hay, a senior feed grain/oat, cool calories and rice bran oil with a half scoop of beet pulp. depending on your size and how much to gain depends on how much to feed a day slow and steady feed too, don't give too much too fast

Teeth floated by vet? Those back molars can cause them to lose weight.

Unbeatable original for volume and a good senior feed like Purina senior or smart edge high fat. Unbeatable has alfalfa, beet pulp, flax and the senior will help gain more. Do around a pound of each morning and night also soak the unbeatable.

My Dad used to put calf mana with the grain, but that’s an old school thing. Best thing check with a veterinarian.

dental, vet check, rule out all physical reasons first, next my absolute favorite products are unbeetable forage only and proforce senior, all soaked. I replace all their forage needs with the unbeetable then all hay/grass are bonus calories. once they get to a healthy weight slowly start cutting back until you find a balance that keeps them at healthy weight

My mare was in sorry shape when I got her…. I say vet, chiro, worm, and full scoop of grain 2x a day and give 2-3 slices of hay 2x a day, 1 slice of alfalfa 1x a day…..takes time but it worked for me. That was her the day I took her.
