I’m a mom of four. My kids are 23, 21, 13, and 3. I was completely done having babies. I knew another pregnancy at my age would be harder on my body, and my husband and I decided a vasectomy was the responsible choice.
I scheduled his appointment, but as it got closer, I realized I had forgotten to request the time off work. So we had to reschedule it, which pushed the vasectomy back about a month.
Eventually, vasectomy day came. We got through the appointment, walked outside, and started loading into the truck. Out of nowhere, my heart sank.
I started tearing up.
It suddenly hit me that this was it. That chapter of my life was officially over. No more pregnancies. No more babies. No more wondering, “What if?” I knew we were making the right decision, especially because pregnancy gets harder as you get older, but there was still this strange, deep grief in realizing my childbearing years were really ending.
Apparently, God, the universe, or my uterus had one final plot twist.
Twelve days after my husband’s vasectomy, I started feeling like my period was coming. Then I stopped and thought, Wait… didn’t I just have these same symptoms two weeks ago? And my period never came?
So I took a pregnancy test.
Positive.
After four kids, after deciding I physically should not carry another baby, after scheduling a vasectomy, accidentally delaying the vasectomy, actually getting the vasectomy, and crying in the parking lot because I thought my baby years were officially over…
I was already pregnant.
Our very unexpected baby girl is now on the way.
