Inside the tail of an Airbus A320 is an area many people never see: the THS compartment.  This section houses the Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer (THS), a key flight control surface responsible for the aircraft’s longitudinal stability.  By adjusting the angle of the entire horizontal stabilizer, the system trims the aircraft for different flight phases - climb, cruise, or descent - reducing the control forces pilots would otherwise need to hold on the controls. This area also contains the cabin rear bulkhead, the pressure bulkhead that seals the pressurized cabin from the unpressurized tail cone. It is a critical structural component that allows the cabin to remain pressurized at altitude. Another important system located here are the cabin overpressure safety valves.  These valves act as a protective backup for the pressurization system: if cabin pressure ever exceeds structural limits, they automatically open to release excess pressure and protect the aircraft structure. And something many people don’t realize: the aircraft’s “black boxes” - the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) - are also installed in the tail section. They are placed here because the rear of the aircraft statistically has a higher chance of surviving severe accidents, increasing the likelihood that the data can be recovered.
