and as soon as us nb trans guys start transitioning the harassment comes right back and suddenly we are just "actually binary trans men who are afraid of being men" 😭😭😭 its so odd just like let people be and present how they want please guys 😭😭😭

I refer to myself as "functionally nonbinary" bc I identify as a binary trans man, but since I dont pass and have no way of pursuing transition for the foreseeable future, I just leaned into my own personal style because the passing tips that worked for me as a teenager no longer work as an adult because even though I looked like a young boy I don't look like a grown man. I just get they/them'd and I'm like "whatever I'll take it"

for a community that so often preaches gender inclusion, people are so often ready to attack anyone who doesn't present the way they want them to

i only just came to terms with being ftm after identifying as genderqueer for years because i internalized all the bullshit people say about us

i consider myself male but i use it/its pronouns online (it/he outside of the internet) and people always try to describe me as nonbinary and just call me a larping theyfab who doesn’t want to transition… im literally legally male

I know I'm genderqueer (I say ftm genderqueer), but I wasn't comfortable telling anyone that up until the last year because I felt like if I expressed that at all the parts of my male/masculine identity that I worked so hard to be acknowledged for would immediately dissappear. And tbh they kind of did. but whatever ig

I just feel like I am a binary trans man and non-binary. I don't feel like the microlabel genderfaun for example. often I wanna be seen as a man but I don't really care I my head if I'm seen as enby or a man. idk if it's clear. it's like both labels are representative to me

This is really interesting to hear, because I’m the opposite way round, I’m agender but identify as a trans man because I found that unless I drew a hard line in the sand over not being identified as a woman no one even recognised me as trans (both because some people straight up just don’t get the idea of people not being either a man or woman, but also from supposed queer-friendly and queer people continually failed to acknowledge me as trans), ultimately, being perceived as a trans man sucks bricks, but at least I can get legally/medically recognised as trans (I’m from the UK though, so obviously this’ll differ to others’ experiences, but here nonbinary people are not legally recognised and public healthcare, which is the only route available to me, is institutionally transphobic, and that gets even worse if you aren’t a binary trans person)

Totally! And I’m so glad I met my husband at the point within my transition when I did. It made me realize gay men have a lot of the same feelings and mixed emotions about their gender that trans men have due to the concept of “man” being tied to having sx with women. As well as “performing” the right type of masculinity. Also just being with a cis man made me realize the way they act in and out of the home differ greatly, and things such as giggling, swaying your body, just normal leisure is so policed outside the home; and that I’m not “less of a man” for the things I’m doing by myself for myself.

i’m an enby trans guy - i used to identify as fully enby because i was internally fucking terrified of being a guy. the transandrophobia was SO strong that i couldn’t deal with it. the enbyphobia was pretty hard but…it was easier than the transandrophobia and my difficulties with binding (i’m hypermobile and have a large chest. sometimes a binder can subluxate my ribs and even then i won’t look flat), and the fact i enjoy fucking with my presentation. but…my gender is masculine. i’m a demi boy. i THEN ended up dating a chaser and felt i constantly had to prove my transness, so i swung back the other way and was terrified of expressing any kind of femininity. it took finding an actually good queer community and caring friends to deal with that, and now im just a guy that fucks with presentation and has a kinda weird relationship with gender because i’m also neurodivergent. there’s no way that anyone accepts and it fucking breaks people, and it took me almost 10 years to actually feel comfortable in my gender. but i still get the weird “theyfab leaping” accusations cos i like wearing makeup sometimes. i’m literally 2 weeks off being 18 months on t, primarily use he pronouns, and primarily present as a man. i describe myself as “functionally a trans man” because the enby part is an internal thing and me doing makeup doesn’t make me less of a guy, it makes me a guy comfortable with makeup. the enby part is purely personal, the trans man side is both personal and political

THIS!!!!!! i say im nonbinary literally just because i'm not willing to fit the cookie cutter mould that you have to aim for for people to see you as a valid binary trans man. i'm sick of people refusing to see me as a man when i try. so i've given up trying instead.

I agree with you and as a nonbinary trans man I think I was kept from realizing I was nonbinary AND a trans man bc I for a long time I thought being a man entailed a certain experience and presentation I never wanted to strive for. it took me nearly a decade to figure out my gender experience can include being a man on top of my nonbinary-ness bc of how trans men are treated in the trans community.

i feel a lot of solidarity with trans men with stuff like this. i'm genderqueer, but years ago i tried to be okay with being a binary trans guy bc i thought it was the only way my dysphoria would be taken seriously and i wouldn't be a "faker" "theyfab" or whatever else. transandrophobia and enbyphobia can present pretty differently at times, so i think if you're used to one, the other can feel "safer" even if it really isn't. regardless, i'll always hold space for trans men. this "cis men of the trans community" stuff is deeply infuriating for multiple reasons but it's also just not true 😭

as a trans masc nonbinary person, it feels like it's get less support. it feels like itd be easier to be a trans man than non binary because then id be less ignored than i am now.

And when you mention having these mixed feelings to some binary trans guys they get weird about it. Idk if I'm nonbinary because of the hostility towards binary trans men in the community or not so attempting to actually try out binary spaces is rough.

I identity as both a Trans Man and Trans Masc, because I fluctuate between Masculine and Androgenous/Nonbinary, but not feminine. I feel masc some days, other days none at all. Still going through the whole Transitioning journey, just waiting for an appointment with a Hormone specialist in November, so hopefully Testosterone soon!

I feel like an example of this is the prevalence of “women and nonbinary” being imperfect as a umbrella definition to represent marginalized genders too, so if you’re in a small town especially there’s functionally no space for a transgender man then you’re willing to accept an imperfect label for yourself to have some form of acceptance.

It definitely seems like the opposite from my perspective as someone who’s transitioned to male and then after nonbinary. People believed in masculinity but don’t understand being nonbinary. Mind you I pass as male when trying to on a visual level so that has a lot to do with it. I think trans men who do not pass do “benefit” from nonbinary labels as a last resort to not be completely misgendered but it’s a real squint whether the space you’re in cares about genderqueer people enough to respect their gender but not a trans man’s. I think it’s more common ime to see issues with this in groups with lots of cis women

right, like just who i am as a person, if i was cis i would been seen as a just a gnc guy, but for some reason for a lot of the broader tmasc community, you can't be transsexual and present queer, you have to pick one. dudebro straight stealth trans or theyfab enby no inbetween 💀😭

as someone who identifies as a trans man and as non binary this is so real. when I was first questioning my gender I was actually sacred of being a trans man, for the reasons you mentioned but also partially because of the way some people talk about men in general. I was so scared to explore my gender in that direction because I was afraid my friends would not believe me or smth. I'm so glad that I came to a point where I am comfortable being who I am and if others want to give me shit for it I don't have to interact with them. also I just remembered that I and another trans masc I know have been talking about "are we really non binary or do we just not like societal views on what a man is supposed to be?" quite frequently when we first came out to each other.

lowk highkey going through this right now 😭 I've identified as a binary ftm for 8 years but I've only recently started to go back into the closet (in a way) and I've found myself feeling ashamed to admit I'm a man in conversations. I simply just say I'm "gender queer" or "transmasc", I'm gnc as well so I'm comfortable presenting fem and masc which only confuses ppl. I recently posted a picture of myself claiming to be trans and everyone called me "passoid" mistaking me for a trans woman, the compliments were very nice but were meant for an mtf not for me. I love my community, but it sometimes feels very isolating and cruel. sorry for the word vomit
