THE HOUSE THAT ONCE WAS A HOME Every morning, voices filled its rooms. Meals were shared, stories were told, and ordinary moments became precious memories. Outside, children ran barefoot through the compound, chasing one another beneath the afternoon sun. They played, argued, and begged for five more minutes before coming inside. And there was that swing. Oh, that little swing! It carried countless afternoons of childhood happiness. Small hands held its ropes while little feet kicked against the air. Their mother would call them inside for supper, but they would pretend not to hear, laughing as they pushed one another higher. Nobody knew those ordinary days would one day become extraordinary memories. Nobody imagined the laughter would ever stop. They believed there would always be another tomorrow. But time has a way of changing everything without asking permission. The children grew up. One left for school, another went searching for work, and another married and started a family elsewhere. Each departure came with a promise: "I will come back soon." "We shall meet again." For a while, they returned, and the house briefly came alive with familiar voices, footsteps, and laughter. But gradually, visits became less frequent. Responsibilities increased, distances grew, and promises to return were postponed. Nobody necessarily stopped loving one another. Life simply carried them in different directions. Slowly, the house began to lose its heartbeat. The rooms grew quieter. Meals became smaller. The voices that once travelled from one end of the house to the other became occasional echoes in memory. Then one day, the last familiar footsteps crossed the compound. The swing remained beneath the open sky, its ropes weathered and its seat worn by time. Whenever the wind passed, it moved gently back and forth, as though an invisible child had returned to play, as though the house was still waiting to hear someone shout, "Push me higher!" But no child came. No mother called them inside. Only the wind answered. Eventually, the day came when the last person had to leave. Perhaps it was an elderly parent who had watched the children grow and scatter into the world. Perhaps it was the last surviving family member whose time in that home had finally ended. We may never know who walked out of this house for the last time. But imagine what that person must have felt. The belongings had been packed, the rooms stood empty, and the familiar corners had lost the little things that once made them feel alive. Before leaving, the person paused at the doorway for one final look. Perhaps they remembered the kitchen where meals were shared, the corner where a child once did homework, or the compound where laughter had filled the air. For a brief moment, perhaps the house was full again, not with people, but with memories. Perhaps they stood there for a few seconds more, gathering the strength to walk away. Then came the final step. The door closed, and a chapter of human life came to an end. Today, someone might look at this house and see nothing more than an abandoned building. But I wonder whether these walls remember the little things that once meant everything to someone. One day, whether we are ready or not, the places we once took for granted become places we can only visit in memory. The people we thought would always be there become the people we wish we could call. And the homes we once rushed to leave become the places our hearts spend years longing to see again. So, if your parents are still here, visit them. If your family is still together, sit a little longer. If your children are still running through your compound, listen to their laughter. Let them make noise. Take photographs, share meals, and make time for the people who make your house a home. Because one day, grass may grow where your children once played, and the doors may open to rooms filled only with silence. A house can stand for a hundred years, but the life that made it a home can pass in the blink of an eye.
