The kingdom drowned… but legend says its bells never stopped ringing. 🔔 A drowned kingdom. Bells beneath the waves. Here’s the Welsh legend behind it. 👇 According to Welsh legend, a kingdom called Cantre’r Gwaelod once stood where Cardigan Bay lies today. Sea defences protected the land—but one night, the gates were left open. In one telling, their keeper, Seithennyn, drank too much at a banquet and forgot to close them. The sea swept in, drowning the kingdom. The strangest part? Tradition says its church bells can still be heard beneath the water on quiet days at Aberdyfi. 📜 THE LEGEND LIVES ON The story appears in the medieval Black Book of Carmarthen. Ancient tree stumps at Borth reveal a real submerged landscape, though they don’t prove the kingdom existed. The bells live on in the Welsh song “Clychau Aberdyfi”—The Bells of Aberdyfi. 📍 Cardigan Bay, on the west coast of Wales. 👀 Is there a legend from your town? Tell us in the comments. It might become a future file. 🗂️ FILE 02 of Untold Files — British folklore, local legends and the stories no one tells.
