@aaron_witt: Highway 1 through California’s Big Sur is easily one of the prettiest drives in America. — But the iconic drive has frequently closed due to landslides, some of which have been monsters.
so what was done to stabilize the dirt? wouldn't erosion chip away at the bottom?

How stupid is it to just rebuild roads there

Is there a theory of the stability of the soil after a slide like that? Is there just enough Mas you think that will retain a new road bed? If you think about it in California, the amount of compaction that they require for a house pad or a road is wild. I guess Core samples and everything can tell if something is compact enough but if something slid like that, how can it be assured that it’s stable?

build a causeway. then when slides happen, it goes under the road.

Jerry Hernandez :
Why don’t they just blow up the rest of the mountain till it’s level with the road so there’s no way for it to slide down anymore
