In Law & Order: SVU S18E11, “Great Expectations,” 13-year-old hockey player Jack Wilson is brutally sexually assaulted with a hockey stick after costing his team a game, and investigators discover that his best friend and star teammate Kyle Turner carried out the attack while two other boys restrained Jack. Jack later dies from complications of his injuries, turning the case into an even greater tragedy. SVU then discovers that Kyle is himself being physically and psychologically abused by his domineering, hockey-obsessed father Jim, who had actually ordered Kyle to punish Jack. Kyle’s older brother Adam deliberately records Jim beating him to provide evidence, while their mother finally acknowledges the years of abuse. Carisi persuades the terrified Kyle to stop protecting his father, and Kyle eventually cooperates with SVU and helps lure Jim to the hockey rink, where Jim is arrested. The episode ends on a grim note: Jack is dead, Jim is exposed as the driving force behind the violence, and Kyle is left as both a victim of his father’s abuse and the boy responsible for the horrific attack on his best friend.
