Eu amo você e amo a nossa amizade. 𝓣hay ! 𐙚 #amizade #fyp #mchariel

Ever wondered why there are four massive lions lounging around Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square? They’re not just a backdrop for tourist selfies: these are the Landseer Lions, and their story is wild. It all started in the 1800s, when the committee behind Nelson’s Column decided the statue needed four lions to represent heroism. But between arguments, money problems, and general chaos, it took nearly 30 years to make it happen. By 1858, they finally hired Sir Edwin Landseer, an animal painter with zero sculpting experience. Not exactly a safe bet for a national monument. Before Landseer got the gig, the committee had actually commissioned another sculptor, Thomas Milnes, who made four stone lions. But they were declared too small and underwhelming for Nelson, so the committee binned the idea and moved on. Those lions? They were quietly sold off and now live in the village of Saltaire near Bradford -  technically, the originalTrafalgar Square lions. Back in London, Landseer struggled to finish the new set. He used a real dead lion from London Zoo as a reference, but by the time he got around to sculpting the paws, it had started to decompose. That’s why they look a little… strange. Kind of sphinx-like. The lions were meant to be standing and roaring, but Queen Victoria reportedly vetoed it as too aggressive. So now they just lounge around, laid-back and unbothered. Each one was cast in bronze, using cannons from ships defeated at the Battle of Trafalgar —- so yes, it’s basically a national flex in feline form. Next time you pass them, look closely : weird paws, concave backs, decades of delays… and a whole lot of Victorian drama cast in metal. #london #trafalgarsquare #londonhistory #secretlondon #hiddengemslondon #londonhiddensecrets #visitlondon#discoverlondon #quirkylondon #History #londonxlondon
