@uraan_stories_official: How Muslim Sailors Moved Against a Headwind 1,000 Years Ago. No sailing ship can point directly into a strong headwind and simply sail forward. So medieval sailors used another method: tacking. They turned the ship diagonally to the wind, trimmed the lateen sail, travelled forward at an angle, then changed direction and repeated the maneuver. The sail produced both forward and sideways force. The underwater hull and keel resisted much of the sideways drift, so the vessel continued making progress. In 1015–1016, Muslim ruler Mujahid al-Amiri of Dénia launched an expedition toward Sardinia with about 120 ships and 1,000 cavalrymen. That meant transporting not only soldiers but also horses and supplies across hundreds of kilometers of Mediterranean water. The lateen sail was an older Mediterranean technology rather than a Muslim invention. But Muslim sailors of Al-Andalus became skilled users of it during an era when Dénia and the Balearic Islands were major naval centers. #IslamicHistory #AlAndalus #SailingHistory #MedievalTechnology #HistoryTok
