I saw one of my daughters friends driving really fast. I told her she was never allowed in the car with him again. Shortly thereafter, the friend was speeding, wrecked and killed the poor passenger teenager in his car and now he’s in prison. My daughter hasn’t questioned my rules since.

I mean it with my whole chest when I say that I have nothing but good intentions when it comes to my babies but these teenage years have really tested me and I sometimes feel so awful about enforcing rules and creating boundaries. I was a teen who's parents didnt care & it's miraculous that I didn't get into trouble. My kids say I drive them crazy, but they also know i love them & my goals are their safety & their success. My 17 yr old used to say "I don't know" when I'd ask who he was going to be with, so I would tell him he couldn't go - If neither of us knew who he would be with, it was inappropriate for him to be there.

I worked with at risk youth, I mean kids who have had a lot of trauma in their early years. My son son was calling me at work one day asking to do something, and I said no, I don’t like the kids you’ll be hanging with, those kids give me bad vibes. He hung the phone up on me , and I remember just letting out the irritation of a grumble and I had a kid sitting in my office who was waiting for his noon/ lunch medicine, who I did not see sitting there. That kid looked me straight in the errand said I would give anything for a mom who gave a shit about what I was doing. This kid was in state placement and by the age of ten had been “sold” a few times by his own mom for drugs/money. I still keep in touch with that kid till this day, ♥️. Kids thrive routine and structure , they just don’t understand it at that moment in their lives.

I had a best friend like this growing up. He would get in trouble at school & go to my mom’s office and tell her just so someone could get onto him, show they cared, because his actual “family” didn’t. He ended taking his own life when we were 16. Thank you for speaking on this topic!
